1) Parasitic Drain
Parasitic drain is due to components in your vehicle continuing to run after the key is turned off. Some parasitic drain is normal–your battery delivers enough energy to keep things like your clock, your radio presets and your security alarm operational at all times. Sometimes, though parasitic drain exceeds what is normal, and can cause car battery drain.
2) Bad Charging
If your charging system isn’t working properly, your car battery can be draining even when you’re driving. If your lights, radio, and other things are running off your alternator, your car battery will drain and you could end up with car battery failure.
3) Old Battery
If your battery is old, it might not hold a full charge any longer. If your car isn’t starting consistently, it’s possible that your battery is just worn out. You should usually replace your battery every 4-5 years, so if your car isn’t starting consistently, and your battery is old, this should be the first thing you consider.
4) Improper Wiring of an Aftermarket Head Unit
The basics of car stereo wiring (refer to XTRONS forum: http://forum.xtrons.co.uk/forum_posts.a ... PID=195400) is not terribly complicated, but it is pretty easy to get it wrong if you are missing some vital information. Every car radio requires a ground and then two or three connections to battery positive. One connection is “always on' and it is used for the memory keep-alive function. The other (which actually provides power to run the head unit) is switched, so that it is only live when the ignition is in the accessory and run positions.
If a head unit is wired wrong, so that the “always on' wire is connected where the switched wire should be connected, the radio will not shut off. It will always have power, so it will continue to draw down on the battery even after you shut the engine off and remove the keys.
What to do with an XTRONS Head Unit that is draining battery?
To fix this issue, the head unit has to be removed and rewired. If you recently had a new head unit installed, and you are experiencing this issue, then you should take it back to the shop that did the work and ask them to fix it.
In basic terms, you will want to check the power wires that are connected to the head unit and determine which one is switched. One wire should be live at all times, and the other should only show 12 volts when the ignition switch is turned on. If these wires are reversed, or the “always on' wire is connected to both, then connecting them correctly should fix the problem.
Troubleshooting for XTRONS Specific Models (Volkswagen) Draining Battery
1) There is a red ACC wire out of the harness, which is labeled with a tag' install this ACC wire only if you don't connect the CANbus', if you have already connected the CANbus, please just disconnect this ACC wire as shown in the picture:
2) Please turn off the key, open the door and shut it again, as some vehicles need the door to open to detect the CANbus
3) Cut the AAC wire of the CANbus harness and connect the other 2 ACC wires. Shown as pictures below:
If the above solution does not help, you will need the assistance of a qualified car audio installer who can diagnose your electrical problem and determine if it is the battery or something else in your cars electrical system. The CANbus may also not be fully compatible. In this case you may return the unit under the warranty. There are four main reasons that can cause battery drain
